2006 - Number 2

Commodore's comment

The Sailing Season has been slow to get going this year due to snow and very cold weather, hopefully the weather will be more favourable for us now. You will see by the enclosed A.S.Y.C. 2006 Sailing Program that the Stonehaven Work Party is on the 3rd of June at 10:00 am. There are a fair number of jobs to do, one of which is painting the Beach Sheds so don't forget boiler suits, gloves & wear old clothes. If anyone has short ladders or steps it would make the job easier. There are a number of trailers [ in varying states of repair ] lying in both dinghy parks. Will the Owners of these identify them by affixing a label with their name on it, any unidentified trailers may be disposed of. There also several old masts and spars in various sheds; identification would make the Tidying Up Gang's life a bit easier. Labels and cable ties are available inside the Club house door. The Committee are at the moment considering replacement of the Dinghy Yard Shed. Estimates at the moment look like a " ballpark " figure of under £35 K. The proposed replacement would be slightly smaller ( no Lean to ) but would have a mezzanine floor giving more overall floor area.

Boats at Skene

Alex Taylor would like to remind all those with boats at Skene which are liable to be blown over in high winds please ensure that they are staked down to avoid damage to their own boat and perhaps others. Shift your road trailers into the woods to make space for more dinghies. Damage occurred recently to a Comet Versa, possibly when another boat was squeezed in. Having your boat damaged is annoying - no one owning up to having caused the damage is infuriating. Look after other people's boats like you would like your pride and joy to be treated. Any laser sailors with old kicker systems now redundant due to rule changes? ASYC toppers are looking for good home.

Meet the Club, 27th May

Spread the word - It's the day of the year to bring your friends and family around to show them where you sneak off to at the weekend. The more of you come out to help the more boats will be around to take folk out. You can even take folk out in a Topper if you try hard enough and fold down! Juniors fancying a sail in something faster than an Oppie (and what isn't) are very welcome to come and join in. Interested? Wanting to join in? Got some friends to drag out?

Work Party 3rd June

Heading for open water? First of all we will need to get Stonehaven spruced up and the cobwebs cleared out. Gather at the Stonehaven Club house on Saturday 3rd June at 10 am. Lots of messy jobs. Bring your boiler suits, gloves and rig boots to join in. Ladders and general tool kits very welcome. We need to get everything ready before you can move your boats into the boat park. Check with Andy where to put them. You will not be able to stow your dinghy at Stoney if you have not paid harbour dues.

The club boats need to be shifted - all 5 Optimists, 6 Toppers, 2 Standard Lasers, 1 Laser2 and the 420 as well as Spare Rib and the Northcraft. Please contact Andy McLennan on 07717761909 or andymaclennan8380@msn.com if you can lend a hand, trailer (car attached) or roof rack (with car underneath). Ditta aims to shift at least some of the Junior boats on Friday 2nd June in the evening. Can you help? Call 01569-762206 or email: Ditta_neumann@yahoo.co.uk

Replacement Dinghy Yard Shed

Plans are afoot to replace the Dinghy Yard shed that was condemned a couple of years back. Current thoughts are towards an industrial warehouse style shed in fetching Heritage Black.

The cost of £35K would cover the removal of the existing structure, laying concrete foundations and erecting the shed. It would sport a mezzanine floor for sail storage and 6 skylights.

The overall floor area would be slightly smaller than the current shed (that one ain't square) and lacks the sieve-like lean-to. If planning permission is granted it has been proposed to commence work in October this year.

MRI Harbour festival 23rd July 10-4

Our local Search and Rescue Boat at Stonehaven (Maritime Rescue Institute) are holding their main fund raising event on Sunday 23rd July. The Harbour festival is unusual, entertaining for all the family and a great day out. ASYC does not sponsor MRI in any other way, but to raise money by serving Tea, Coffee and Cakes in the MRI work shop on the day.

We are one of their prime customers and it is a great way to thank them for all their help during our regatta last year (they supplied 2 rescue boats that were sorely needed). So, if you can give an hour of your time helping out (that goes for those with a Y-chromosome too) then please contact Helen Sinclair at home: 01224 480343.

ASYC Regatta 19-20th August

Just don't whistle on the day! The ASYC regatta is scheduled for the weekend of 19-20th August.

If you know of anyone or any organisation who maybe able to help by providing a Rescue Boat, please contact the Sailing Secretary, John Styles on 01330 860576(h) or email: johnstyles@rya-online.net.

Anyone who would like to help cater for the masses pelase contact Helen Sinclaire at home: 01224 480343

Extracurricular fundraising activities

Francis Neill reports that an infectious disease called marathon running has mysteriously hit the Laser fleet which is why he hasn't spent as much time sailing this season as he would have liked - it takes a lot of time to do 20 miles training runs! Thanks to Franci's sponsors generosity who helped raise over £3218 for Whizz-kidz to date. There were actually 3 Laser sailors running Marathons, Francis Neill and John Colegrave doing the London and Neil Ritchie the Fort William marathon.

Franci's interest in Whizz-Kidz is due to his 12 year old child, Tim, who has cerebral palsy and uses a wheelchair part of the time. Tim is lucky in that his parents can afford to ensure that he gets as full a life as possible - that's him playing tennis! Many other kids are not so lucky.

He is also king of the walking frame 50m sprint! Whizz-kidz helps kids get independence by providing specialised wheelchairs and mobility equipment (if you believe that the UK NHS provides great equipment then you've been fortunate enough not to have to deal with it!).

You can still sponsor Francis on www.justgiving.com/francisneill

Kieran and Emily Williams (sailing Enterprise 6247 (around the Dinghy Yard Shed) or alternatively swimming with Andy McLennan in the 505) are taking to their wheels to take part in the L'Etape du Tour: a stage of the Tour de France that is open to amateurs. The route for the ride is the same as what the "real" riders will cover a couple of days later. Check training progress on their Blog (http://devoteesofthewheel.blogspot.com) and view the challenge ahead at the Tour de France web site (http://www.letour.fr/2006/TDF/presentation/us/profil_15.html).

They are undertaking this challenge to raise money for the Aberdeen Branch of the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Scotland (http://www.ms-aberdeen.org.uk/). The Centre desperately requires funding in order to continue its valuable work of providing information and advice, sessions for people who are recently diagnosed, support for individuals and their families, emotional support and opportunities to meet others with MS.

If you can spare some money please go to this web address (http://www.justgiving.com/etape2006) and donate

Power Boats and courses

The club will be running powerboat courses and OOD training. Any members interested in attending either or both, if they can contact John Styles (01330 860576 or sailingsec@asyc.org.uk) There will be RYA powerboat training to level 2 once we go to Stonehaven.

First aid course are offered by the Red Cross, 22 Queens Rd, Aberdeen, tel: 01224 647741do regular first aid courses both basic first aid and four day HSE courses at a very reasonable cost, the one day basic first aid course costs less than £20.00

Junior Sailing

Sailing got underway for the Juniors on the 22nd and 23rd April with about 36 kids registered, varying in age between 6 and 14. A great big THANK YOU to everyone who helped get the show on the road. Without the great efforts by parents and especially those without kids in the lessons these sessions simply would not happen. Special thanks to Colin Ladd and Craig Evans who at very short notice took on the Saturday morning lead. The first Saturday proved particularly fierce with icy winds lashing the loch, resulting in dry sailing next to the club house and later Oppie races inside the Boat house.

Sunday sessions started a lot less dramatic. Special thanks to Elspeth for volunteering to take on the wayward Topper fleet, and to Alan Fraser for allowing himself to be crow bared out of bed every Sunday morning.

Junior fun day moved to 4th June and Stonehaven

The Junior fun day has been moved. There will be normal sessions on the 27th and 28th May at Skene. Could anyone travelling back to Stoney on Sunday please strap an Oppie to the roof of their car and drop them in the Beach Shed at Stonehaven! The Toppers will still be needed for race training the following Thursday. Ditta hopes to shift the Toppers on Friday 2nd June after work. If you can help please call 01569-762206 or email Ditta_Neumann@yahoo.co.uk .

The kids really enjoyed a ride on some bigger boats during the “Meet the club” day. All Juniors are very welcome to join in the activities on the 28th in the afternoon (start around noon). It was one of the highlights last year and Brian's Tornado was never short of crew.

There will be no session on Saturday 3rd June, though you can always come to the Stonehaven work party to cause chaos. The Fun will now take place on Sunday 4th June in Stonehaven from 10am to noon. There will be several activities, depending on wind and waves. Please let Ditta know if you can't attend.

Yotlinx

Yotlinx is an online sailing club, mainly for yacht sailors. It is primarily aimed at bringing people together to charter yachts for cruising weekends, holidays, regattas etc. So it may be of interest to your members who, from time to time, may wish to do this either in home waters or say the West coast or say the med, it doesn't matter. Yotlinx also works for boat owners wanting crew and for clubs who may wish to post events and cast the net beyond there own club membership. Contact Dave Morrish (Managing Director) on 01330-844610 or look on www.yotlinx.net.

“Yotlinx is an excellent service and David Morrish is so keen to get people of all abilities sailing. That is why I use it - I need to log sailing hours through out the season and it is a great way to make contact with others who want to sail but do not have family or group to do it with.” Margaret Ponsonby
