2006 - Number 2 |
Commodore's commentThe Sailing Season has been slow to get going this year due to snow and very cold weather, hopefully the weather will be more favourable for us now. You will see by the enclosed A.S.Y.C. 2006 Sailing Program that the Stonehaven Work Party is on the 3rd of June at 10:00 am. There are a fair number of jobs to do, one of which is painting the Beach Sheds so don't forget boiler suits, gloves & wear old clothes. If anyone has short ladders or steps it would make the job easier. There are a number of trailers [ in varying states of repair ] lying in both dinghy parks. Will the Owners of these identify them by affixing a label with their name on it, any unidentified trailers may be disposed of. There also several old masts and spars in various sheds; identification would make the Tidying Up Gang's life a bit easier. Labels and cable ties are available inside the Club house door. The Committee are at the moment considering replacement of the Dinghy Yard Shed. Estimates at the moment look like a " ballpark " figure of under £35 K. The proposed replacement would be slightly smaller ( no Lean to ) but would have a mezzanine floor giving more overall floor area. |

Boats at SkeneAlex Taylor would like to remind all those with boats at Skene which are liable to be blown over in high winds please ensure that they are staked down to avoid damage to their own boat and perhaps others. Shift your road trailers into the woods to make space for more dinghies. Damage occurred recently to a Comet Versa, possibly when another boat was squeezed in. Having your boat damaged is annoying - no one owning up to having caused the damage is infuriating. Look after other people's boats like you would like your pride and joy to be treated. Any laser sailors with old kicker systems now redundant due to rule changes? ASYC toppers are looking for good home. |
Meet the Club, 27th MaySpread the word - It's the day of the year to bring your friends and family around to show them where you sneak off to at the weekend. The more of you come out to help the more boats will be around to take folk out. You can even take folk out in a Topper if you try hard enough and fold down! Juniors fancying a sail in something faster than an Oppie (and what isn't) are very welcome to come and join in. Interested? Wanting to join in? Got some friends to drag out? |

Replacement Dinghy Yard Shed Plans are afoot to replace the Dinghy Yard shed that was condemned a couple of years back. Current thoughts are towards an industrial warehouse style shed in fetching Heritage Black. The cost of £35K would cover the removal of the existing structure, laying concrete foundations and erecting the shed. It would sport a mezzanine floor for sail storage and 6 skylights. The overall floor area would be slightly smaller than the current shed (that one ain't square) and lacks the sieve-like lean-to. If planning permission is granted it has been proposed to commence work in October this year. |

Kieran and Emily Williams (sailing Enterprise 6247 (around the Dinghy Yard Shed) or alternatively swimming with Andy McLennan in the 505) are taking to their wheels to take part in the L'Etape du Tour: a stage of the Tour de France that is open to amateurs. The route for the ride is the same as what the "real" riders will cover a couple of days later. Check training progress on their Blog (http://devoteesofthewheel.blogspot.com) and view the challenge ahead at the Tour de France web site (http://www.letour.fr/2006/TDF/presentation/us/profil_15.html).They are undertaking this challenge to raise money for the Aberdeen Branch of the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Scotland (http://www.ms-aberdeen.org.uk/). The Centre desperately requires funding in order to continue its valuable work of providing information and advice, sessions for people who are recently diagnosed, support for individuals and their families, emotional support and opportunities to meet others with MS. If you can spare some money please go to this web address (http://www.justgiving.com/etape2006) and donate |
Power Boats and coursesThe club will be running powerboat courses and OOD training. Any members interested in attending either or both, if they can contact John Styles (01330 860576 or sailingsec@asyc.org.uk) There will be RYA powerboat training to level 2 once we go to Stonehaven. |
Junior Sailing
Sailing got underway for the Juniors on the 22nd and 23rd April with about 36 kids registered, varying in age between 6 and 14. A great big THANK YOU to everyone who helped get the show on the road. Without the great efforts by parents and especially those without kids in the lessons these sessions simply would not happen. Special thanks to Colin Ladd and Craig Evans who at very short notice took on the Saturday morning lead. The first Saturday proved particularly fierce with icy winds lashing the loch, resulting in dry sailing next to the club house and later Oppie races inside the Boat house.
Sunday sessions started a lot less dramatic. Special thanks to Elspeth for volunteering to take on the wayward Topper fleet, and to Alan Fraser for allowing himself to be crow bared out of bed every Sunday morning.
Junior fun day moved to 4th June and StonehavenThe Junior fun day has been moved. There will be normal sessions on the 27th and 28th May at Skene. Could anyone travelling back to Stoney on Sunday please strap an Oppie to the roof of their car and drop them in the Beach Shed at Stonehaven! The Toppers will still be needed for race training the following Thursday. Ditta hopes to shift the Toppers on Friday 2nd June after work. If you can help please call 01569-762206 or email Ditta_Neumann@yahoo.co.uk . |
